Distracted driving takes on three forms: visual, manual and cognitive. Unfortunately, one or a combination of these can result in serious accidents and injuries.

It’s estimated that nine people in the U.S. suffer fatal injuries due to accidents caused by a distracted driver in the U.S. This doesn’t even account for the thousands of injuries that occur. It’s also worth mentioning that distracted driving doesn’t just happen with one age group. It is seen in teens to seniors, showing what a serious problem it is.

While any type of distraction can be dangerous, some more commonly lead to accidents than others. Learn what those are here.

Electronic screens

One of the most common causes of distractions while driving is screens. This includes the screen on your phone and even the screen in your vehicle. Screens are used for a variety of tasks in your vehicle today including texting, emailing, using your navigation system and even selecting music. Unfortunately, paying attention to a screen, rather than the road ahead can result in serious accidents.

Muti-tasking

Another common cause of distraction is if you try to multi-task behind the wheel. While you drive, you may try to use your phone, eat, talk to passengers or do something else besides focusing on the task at hand – driving. When you do anything besides driving, you are distracted and the likelihood of an accident increases.

What to do if you are involved in an accident with a distracted driver

If you are involved in an accident with a distracted driver, it’s important that you take steps to protect your rights. In most cases, they will be found liable for the incident, which means you have the right to recover compensation. Knowing your legal options will help you with the recovery process.
