Mistakes to avoid at a DUI checkpoint

On Behalf of | Jul 6, 2023 | DWI |

Law enforcement agencies create DUI (Driving Under the Influence) checkpoints to ensure road safety and identify impaired drivers. These checkpoints can be intimidating for motorists, but remaining calm and cooperating with the authorities is important.

Unfortunately, a checkpoint can also be stressful for some drivers, even if they have not been drinking. Because of this, knowing what mistakes to avoid at a DUI checkpoint is beneficial.

Avoiding the checkpoint

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to avoid the DUI checkpoint. Evading the checkpoint can result in serious legal consequences. Following the instructions and proceeding through the checkpoint as required is better.

Acting suspicious

At a DUI checkpoint, remaining calm and composed is crucial. Avoid any suspicious behavior that might raise suspicion among the officers. This includes excessive nervousness, fidgeting or acting strangely. Stay relaxed and be polite when interacting with the officers.

Refusing to comply with instructions

Cooperation is key when you approach a DUI checkpoint. Rolling down your window, providing your driver’s license and answering basic questions are standard procedures. Refusing to cooperate can escalate the situation and lead to further investigation.

Admitting anything to the officers

While it’s important to cooperate, be careful about what you say. Avoid self-incriminating statements or admitting to drinking alcohol or doing drugs. Remember, anything you say can be used against you. It is always best to answer the officer’s questions in as few words as possible while remaining polite and compliant.

You can navigate a DUI checkpoint without issues by avoiding these common mistakes. If you are stopped at a DUI checkpoint, remain calm and remember your rights. This will help you handle your situation until you can fully explore your defense options.
